Danny Gokey's rise to fame began in 2009 while a contestant on the eighth season of the talent competition American Idol. The Milwaukee, Wisconsin native cruised to the finals where he ultimately placed third behind Allison Iraheta and winner Kris Allen. Gokey entered the competition only four weeks after his wife's death in July 2008.

Danny Gokey no longer needs to enter talent competitions, instead he makes Christian music hits in his new hometown of Brentwood, Tennessee where he purchased a home in late 2014.
