How Did Nitty Gritty Dirt Band Become Famous?

The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, formed in 1966 in Long Beach, California, originally started as a jug band before embracing the burgeoning southern California folk rock style. Dressed in distinctive pinstripe suits and cowboy boots, the band gained early recognition with their first paying performance at the Golden Bear in Huntington Beach. Notable successes include their rendition of Jerry Jeff Walker's "Mr. Bojangles."

Their pivotal album, 1972's "Will the Circle be Unbroken," showcased collaborations with legendary country artists like Mother Maybelle Carter, Earl Scruggs, Roy Acuff, Doc Watson, Merle Travis, and Jimmy Martin. A sequel, "Will the Circle Be Unbroken: Volume Two," released in 1989, achieved gold certification, won two Grammys, and was honored as Album of the Year at the Country Music Association Awards.
