Celebrities Diagnosed With Cancer Winning The Battle
In 2015 just before her 45th birthday, Shannen Doherty was diagnosed with breast cancer. Since her diagnosis, the actress probably best known for playing the character Brenda Walsh in Beverly Hills, 90210, has talked candidly both about her treatments and about how having the support of family and friends is helping with her struggle. With a solid support team, the burden on the cancer patient can be greatly reduced. From words of encouragement to helping with important tasks such as making doctor's appointments, handling food shopping, etc, these acts can greatly lessen the emotional toll that affects every cancer patient. As Shannen Doherty said, she needs "the people that are honest and there and love me for me, and not anything else." Knowing that someone cares about your struggle could be considered a form of cancer therapy alone.
She further commented: "I'm continuing to eat right, exercise and stay very positive about my life. I'm thankful to family, friends and doctors for their support and, of course, my fans who have stood by me."
On September 27, 2017, Julia Louis-Dreyfus received a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for her role on HBO's Veep. On the next day, she announced her breast cancer diagnosis on Twitter. In the ensuing months, the actress and comedian found that laughter helped her get through the challenges of chemotherapy. Much of that comedy relief came from Louis-Dreyfus' two sons Henry and Charles. The two even produced a hilarious dance video to the Michael Jakson song "Beat It" as an homage to her final day of chemotherapy treatments in January 2018.
On March 6, 2019, Alex Trebek announced that he had been diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer. In late May of 2019, the Jeopardy host reported that he was responding well to chemotherapy and that some of the tumors had shrunk rapidly, much to the astonishment of his doctors. Trebek credits some of his success thus far in winnning against cancer to optimism. On Jeopardy, contestants use their minds to solve trivial problems, now Trebek is using his mind to help solve his cancer problem. He said "You can be pessimistic, or you can be optimistic. It's a lot better to be optimistic because you stand a much better chance of helping cure yourself." In late August 2019, Trebek announced that he had finished with chemotherapy and is again taping new episodes of Jeopardy.
Samantha Harris is a model, entertainment reporter, author and now she can add cancer survivor to the list. In 2014 at the age of 40 she announced that she was diagnosed with breast cancer and later opted to have a double mastectomy. She believes that winning the battle against cancer should include consuming an assortment of natural products such as antioxidant-rich green tea, and bee pollen that works as an anti-inflammatory. She also emphasizes the important role that being positive plays in recovery.
