Over the recent months, a real-life horror has crept up on Casey Key, and most of the Florida's Gulf beaches. Known as red tide, these algal blooms rarely pose a risk to humans, however, this red tide outbreak was much more severe. In 2018, a 26-foot whale shark, 16 dolphins, and thousands upon thousands of fish were fatally wounded by this aquatic menace. Some beach-goers had experienced breathing problems and eye irritation, which forced officials to close down many beaches.

Before modern celebrities like Stephen King arrived, Casey Key was linked to a nautical celebrity of sorts. Casey Key is named after Captain John Charles Casey, who helped map the area for The National Geodetic Survey, then known as the U.S. Coast Geodetic Survey. A historical map of Florida from 1856 shows the name Casey's Pass was used instead of Casey Key. Maps after 1856 were updated to the name to Casey's Key. Casey Key was also once known as "The Treasure Island" because of treasure believed to be buried there.

All of the tourist-related destinations are located on the south end of Casey Key. For dining, North Jetty Tap & Grill is serving up casual comfort food.
